I often feel that January is a month that I endure rather than enjoy. This year I'm attempting to shift my mindset and rather than wish the days away until spring arrives, embrace the winter months doing activities that make it more bearable.
This includes going out, even if it means wrapping up - we're going to try and have some days out, making the most of our National Trust membership, rather than 'waiting until the summer'.
But what to do on those days when you really don't want to leave the confines of the living room? It's all too easy to watch mindless tv or spend too much time on your phone. I'm keeping my sketchbook in the living room so I can sketch rather than scroll and then I had an idea about bringing some of my sketches to life using thread.
So I've challenged myself to make a piece of art for every month, using thread, not paint, my usual medium. All I'll need is a piece of fabric in an embroidery hoop, thread, needle and scissors - all of which can carried easily. I can work in front of the log burner or under the shade of tree in the summer.
The subjects will most likely be simple, I want each project to be relaxing, so no complicationed designs. The theme for January is 'cosy' - so I decided upon a mug of tea, the fuel that keeps me going on a chilly day. I did a few sketches, picked my favourite and drew it onto fabric- let the stitching begin!
I'll be sharing my progress on my Instagram stories. Do you have a creative project for the year ahead? You can comment here, or share your mood boosting ideas that beat the winter blues.
What a brilliant idea Sharon. I have done a lot of embroidery this month so far. I look forward to hearing more from you 🥰
